It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. It actually looked like the station owner was breeding birds rather than cattle! White-winged Black Terns resting on the fence We saw a lovely group of three Red-kneed Dotterel trying to find ground above water and there were 7 Sacred Kingfishers taking advantage of the fence to roost and pounce on tadpoles.

Above is a photo of the only Burrowing Owl ( Athene cunicularia ) seen at Tuscan Preserve back in February of 2010 when a group of concerned birders installed eight artificial burrows on this property, to be preserved in perpetuity. This property is also a site with vernal pools and uses cattle grazing for vegetation control.

Audubon Associate Naturalist, have led this tour many times, through tornados, droughts, questionable restaurants, and, sadly, the advent of fracking, and every one of my friends who has participated over the years has raved about the experience and the birds (in fact, one member of our group was on his third or fourth trip, I lost count).

Again, there were lots of new birds here, and I was not even surprised to have a large group of white herons fly right over my head. The real shock came, when at the last minute, I realized that they were not Greater Egrets , nor the smaller Snowy Egrets , but Cattle Egrets – Bubulcus ibis.

We were met by several Cattle Egret in beautiful breeding plumage feeding on the grass right next to the train station. There were a couple of people with large cameras and then several school groups. There was something “not right” about it. It was not a Milky Stork or a Painted Stork.

Until recently the cattle that grazed here were tethered, but they are now allowed to range freely, and by doing so they have opened up the marsh considerably, creating fine habitat. Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). I was practically right next to the two in this photo (and, note the Rufescent Tiger-heron photobomb). 1,712 species, 12% of which are endemics. I shouldn’t have been surprised. We are entering the mixed colony of 11 species ( Grey , Squacco , Purple and Black-crowned Night Herons ; Great , Little and, recently, Cattle Egrets ; Eurasian Spoonbill (below) and Glossy Ibis ; Pygmy and Great Cormorant ). These visits are strictly regulated and the birds are habituated to people, showing no reaction to our presence.

Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. The native plants are often in groups due to the fact that they are mostly self-seeding and once you find a group of these trees or shrubs it is worth stopping to see what is feeding off the nectar. It was very damp along the edges of the road and there were two male Superb Lyrebirds busy kicking through the leaves right on the edge of the road. As we came through the open fields towards the coast there were numerous Cattle Egrets among the cattle and Straw-necked Ibis. Superb Fairy-wren -male. Australian Magpie.

” White-tailed Deer have been introduced but no one in our group picked up any ticks. Cattle Egrets were easily found in any open areas, particularly around the airport and the eastern end of the island. I guess I wasn’t in the right spot to see them! Scaly-naped Pigeons are easy to find anywhere in Culebra.

Palmerston lies to the south east and Darwin to the north west and there is a bicycle path almost right to the reserve. You first encounter the Magpie Geese with Cattle Egret along Fiddlers Lane in the mango orchards and they are taking advantage of the shade and the fallen mangos. After lunch the group moved onto a nearby birding site, Pitt Town Lagoon. A single Australian Pelican on an island demanded the first look, as did the Australian Darter drying its wings right next to it. Could it get any better? Well, sure, as they also located a soaring Brown Goshawk. After that?

The Cerro de Punhuato (poon-WA-toe) nature reserve, officially denominated a biological garden, is right on the northeastern edge of Morelia’s urban zone. We have examples of enough historical styles of buildings, mostly built with local stone, to draw groups from architecture schools. It was really very early.
