I was heartbroken because I thought one was orphaned but now that they travel as a group, I'm less upset. I won't try to grab them, but I look out for them and chase the stray cats away. The birds know my voice and this one beat up looking squirrel actually comes right up to me. I'm not as crazy as I sound.

Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. The cat actually appeared almost golden in the early morning light and this time we could admire its magnificent thick, blotched pelt, extremely long tail and large head. The Davis County Commission has agreed to pay the legal fees of an animal rights group after settling a lawsuit over animal shelter records. The money will cover a portion of PETA's legal fees for a lawsuit the group filed in January about animals that had been sold by the county shelter for research purposes.

I never cared much for insects and my interest in plants never got beyond the veggy section of my supermarked – in spite of buying field guides and giving both groups a good try. This is very bad news for a group that is largely nocturnal and has adapted to a secretive lifestyle, and is thus best detected by its tracks and signs.

Any season is good for looking for birds if you have the right mindset. On the grass at the edge of the fence was a large group of California Quail. Some species take fruit, but I have been told not to encourage sanctuary birds to enter my garden by staff at Zealandia due to the high numbers of cats in our area.
