Animal Relief Efforts in Haiti

Critter News

Even under the best conditions, animals have a tough life in poverty stricken nations like Haiti. But, of course, we don't pay attention to Haiti unless the buildings all fall down. Tags: Haiti The Humane Society has information here. The ASPCA has a page too. I imagine like everything else, this is going to take a lot of hard work.

Becoming Sensitized to Animals in Books

Critter News

It's a book by Tracy Kidder about Dr. Paul Farmer, an international health advocate who made his name from his work in Haiti and his fight against Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR). There were various brief descriptions of the poor animals of Haiti. The cockfights that are so popular in Haiti. I read a lot. A whole lot. Over the years, I've noticed that the role of animals jumps out at me in any book I read.

We Interrupt Regularly Scheduled.

These people were certain that Haiti’s president Jean-Bertrand Aristide had been ousted by the CIA in 2004 because he proposed a minimum wage increase, like Zelaya’s. Haiti and Honduras have always set the bottom line for minimum wages. We interrupt regularly scheduled deconstructing, editorializing, commenting and ranting to bring you a letter from John Perkins : Dear Friends Speaking of Democracy, Honduras, and President Obama.

On Alienating the Neighbors

Because she was very busy with finals, she left Izzy with her parents, who had never had a dog in their lives (she said it was a cultural thing--they're from Haiti and don't have the same relationship with dogs as we do in the United States, and having been to Haiti I know what she's talking about). First of all, I think it's time I start vlogging, like Elaine does.

November is. Awareness Month

Animal Person

Haiti doesn't allow people from the Church of the Latter-Day Saints to adopt. My inbox this month has informed me that November is Vegan Awareness Month! And Diabetes Awareness Month. And Adoption Awareness Month. Who knew November was such a potentially-informative month? Here's my attempt to bring it all together in an Animal Person post. I am a vegan who has adopted a diabetic greyhound who eats vegan food ( Natural Balance ), and who is adopting a boy from Russia.

Bicknell’s Thrush in Trouble on Wintering Grounds

10,000 Birds

The expanse of cloud forest also serves critical, irreplaceable ecological functions for both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Any birder who has committed to accumulating an impressive ABA-area list knows about the rare and elusive Bicknell’s Thrush. Believe me, after hiking up a mountain in the middle of the night just to catch a glimpse of this bird, I have mixed feelings about whether we even need it in a world with abundant Gray-cheeked Thrush , its more copious counterpart.

Rwanda Dreaming

And the results are indicative, representative and nothing short of surprising: Brunei, The Gambia, Belize, Jamaica, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Rwanda, Equatorial Guinea, Panama and Haiti top the list. The beginning of the northern summer is a good time (as any) to dream of some of the most biodiverse places on Earth. No, I am not talking of Brazil or Columbia, they are not just in the tropics but more importantly, they are officially huge.

Over 6,000 books and workbooks have been distributed to families with sick children, military families, and children displaced by Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti. Half a decade ago, in a little mountain town about 60 miles northeast of San Diego, a feral kitten dragged his front left leg uselessly.

Birds of the West Indies by Kirwan, Levesque, Oberle & Sharpe

10,000 Birds

Or How a Serbian Suave Playboy Promoted Birding the Caribbean. Oh, the joys of slipping through the pages of a new book that has just arrived, the Birds of the West Indies by Kirwan, Levesque, Oberle and Sharpe. I am checking the References and one name, expectedly, stands out: Bond, J. Is it even possible to bird the Caribbean without the feeling that James Bond birds over your shoulder, telling you: That may be an incorrect ID, recheck that one?
