I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. An hour later, I add another layer of clothing.

Many years have passed by now and I have visited the Forgotten Road 2 to 3 times in most years, enough to find most of the birds Bratislav mentioned, but a few of the mostly nocturnal, such as an Ural Owl or a Corncrake (I always visited in the morning). Middle and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers were mostly in lower, oak sections.

For some reason, the HBW specifically mentions that this species also breeds in a city park in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. A Grey-headed Woodpecker lives nearby. Just keep an eye out for the Barred Owl perched on a Mini Cooper and that is where you will find him. If it were not for the resident cardinals and large number of breeding exotics, Matheson Hammock would be all but silent during the late spring and early summer.
