The ABA currently lumps the Mangrove Warbler and Golden Warbler with the Yellow Warbler (the IOC lumps Mangrove and Golden Warbler together but splits them from the Yellow Warbler that breeds in North America.) The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. If it were not for the resident cardinals and large number of breeding exotics, Matheson Hammock would be all but silent during the late spring and early summer. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barn owl because it was almost white. And my first Killdeer of year! Wicked, right?

Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. Rufous-winged Woodpecker – one of the many forest-based birds in Costa Rica. “I hope the rain stops by dawn” : I probably said this after trying once more for owls and being treated to the same wet sound of dripping water, windy leaves, and vocalizing frogs. Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.

I haven’t done any surveys, but I would bet my binoculars that images and stories of hawks attract more attention and adoration from birders and the average person on the street than any other bird family. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. Those cameras are aimed at hawks.
