My best sighting was a Hairy Woodpecker puffed up to fight the cold. On Saturday he dragged his family to the Adirondack Mountains to see a stake out Great Gray Owl in Keene, a first for all three in the family. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was one of the easiest to decide that he can remember.

A Little Owl blocked the road and asked for our Covid health certificates. Similarly, the Alpine Leaf Warbler is one of the more attractive species in an otherwise almost indistinguishable family of identical leaf warblers. (“But the difference in wing bars, Kai!”). A Grey-headed Woodpecker lives nearby.

There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. This area was good during our visits over the three weeks for Laced Woodpeckers and Common Flamebacks. We were very lucky to find the Sunda Scops Owl on our last visit the day we left Singapore.

Golden-cheeked Woodpecker , a stunning relative of the more familiar Red-bellied of the eastern United States, proved to be the first Mexican endemic we encountered. We decided to take it easy that first evening and try owling on another date. Unfortunately, heavy rain and uncooperative owls hampered us from cleaning up that day.

Quetzals on the roadside but to be honest, the overall birding was just as satisfying around Myriam’s; a small diner, cabins, and set of trails through nice high elevation forest run by a very friendly, gracious family. These people also know about the rare Unspotted Saw-whet Owl and will take you on a night hike to look for it.
