After a similar procedure, Moya’s watch-me-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-my-hat trick produced a fuzzy nestling Eastern Screech Owl. Imagine the nocturnal owls trying to sleep… ‘I told you we shouldn’t have moved near those woodpeckers!’

In the UK we have a mere three resident woodpeckers, but in the vicinity of Kerkini it’s not difficult to find all of Europe’s peckers except the Three-toed. Wintering Wallcreepers are always a possibility, too, generally in quarries where Eagle Owls are resident. I’ve only found one once, but it was a delightfully confiding bird.

Many years have passed by now and I have visited the Forgotten Road 2 to 3 times in most years, enough to find most of the birds Bratislav mentioned, but a few of the mostly nocturnal, such as an Ural Owl or a Corncrake (I always visited in the morning). Middle and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers were mostly in lower, oak sections.

That corner was particularly fruitful as always, we even had appearances by a Cocoa Woodcreeper and a Chestnut Woodpecker. Within the same tree, a pair of Golden-olive Woodpeckers were also poking around. These medium-sized woodpeckers also feed on nectar and frequently are seen feeding alongside honeycreepers and tanagers.

The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. Blue T**s and Great T**s abound as do Greater Spotted Woodpeckers. I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. An hour later, I add another layer of clothing.

Like Paso Ancho, the La Escalera area is a great place to see Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls. But unlike Paso Ancho, there are Acorn Woodpeckers there to harass them. European Collared and Pied Flycatchers , Eurasian Hoopoes , Common Cuckoos and Tree Pipits are back in late March, while Eurasian Scops Owls are back by late March – early April. Black Woodpeckers are still relatively easy to hear and see. Also, in some areas Ural Owls become bolder and visible by the roadside.
