So we just had a baby owl sadly die in our backyard. It was in a hole in our oaktree that we think a woodpecker made weeks ago. We just noticed the owl in it yesterday. Weve been seeing a giant crow getting close to it all day today and many other birds have been fighting it off.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The bunny got away.

I had been hoping that the Barn Owl I’d seen here a couple of days before would appear, but it was clearly back at its roost. Marsh and Long-tailed Tit joined the list, quickly followed by Nuthatch (heard but not seen), Great Spotted Woodpecker and Jay. Treecreeper would have been a bonus, but none were to be seen.

The apparent deliciousness of this fruit gave me my best photos yet of the beautiful (and noisy) Yellow-winged Cacique , as well as a hungry female Gray-cheeked Woodpecker.
