The Red-shouldered Hawks , the quick flapping Accipiters and the legions of blackbirds and ducks moved through the cool airs of March and April but the orioles, grosbeaks, and wood-warblers wouldn’t show up until the trees had their buds and many had their leaves. The Asian Koel is a cuckoo species and thus freed from the obligation to raise its own chicks (though the birds like to refer to themselves as brood parasites, which sounds a bit less obviously selfish). According to their website , Lassen Volcanic National Park provides habitat for approximately 216 species of birds in which 96 have been known to actually breed in the park. Near Summit Lake we have been able to witness Williamson’s Sapsuckers ( Sphyrapicus thyroideus ) raising their young in a snag near the campground.

Egyptian Vultures raised is isolation used rocks to crack eggs presented to them. Interestingly some of these ponds are favored by these herons for foraging and have ducks that are fed by people. Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. There were plenty of Australian Pelicans, Royal Spoonbills, Black-winged Stilt and Gull-billed Terns, but the numbers were down on the Plumed Whistling Ducks which normally line the edge of the ponds in their thousands.
