As a birder, this 72 minute documentary film about the Duck Stamp Contest didn’t accomplish what I was hoping it might – get people excited about the Duck Stamp, or at least wildlife conservation. Kerkini does, of course, attract tremendous numbers of wintering wildfowl, including huge numbers of Common Pochard , by far the most numerous of the diving ducks. There’s always good numbers of all the surface-feeding ducks that you would expect, from Pintail to Eurasian Wigeon. Both Bewick’s and Whooper Swans occur in good numbers.

As we passed by a small body of water a couple of Apolinar’s Wrens ( Cistothorus apolinari ) skittered in between the stalks of grass and one of them even sort of displayed on top of a small plant with its tail raised high up. The Red-shouldered Hawks , the quick flapping Accipiters and the legions of blackbirds and ducks moved through the cool airs of March and April but the orioles, grosbeaks, and wood-warblers wouldn’t show up until the trees had their buds and many had their leaves. At some sites, flocks of 30, even 60 or more birds are expected.

If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. Never raise a wild goose or duckling yourself.

I was at Baranda fish farm, north of Belgrade, following a short embankment without much hope: swans and ducks at the right hand side and a solar powered screamer at the left, meant to scare cormorants with sounds of shooting, reloading, shooting and bird cries (presumably in agony). Simply, they are among the most beautiful ducks around.

Nice weather, as they say, for ducks. It’s relatively small as ducks go, and certainly doesn’t have stunning plumage, but it is fairly attractive and has a distinctive white ring around the eye which helps distinguish it from the closely related Chestnut Teal of Australia.

The Asian Koel is a cuckoo species and thus freed from the obligation to raise its own chicks (though the birds like to refer to themselves as brood parasites, which sounds a bit less obviously selfish). There has been a steady increase of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , which now number in the thousands, and trying to find any other birds among them is quite problematic due to their large numbers. Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. The Australian Painted Snipe nest was positioned on higher ground in between the fence and the highway.

Here in Broome we observe a good selection of ducks and the most prolific at the Broome Poo Ponds is usually the Plumed Whistling-Duck. One of our favourite ducks is the Pink-eared Duck. Pacific Black Ducks lay up to 16 eggs and sometimes two clutches are raised in a year.

Egyptian Vultures raised is isolation used rocks to crack eggs presented to them. Interestingly some of these ponds are favored by these herons for foraging and have ducks that are fed by people. Near Summit Lake we have been able to witness Williamson’s Sapsuckers ( Sphyrapicus thyroideus ) raising their young in a snag near the campground. Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the few places that this incredible cavity nesting duck breeds in Northern California. She is in a snag, at least forty feet up!

The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt.
