Throughout the book, Keith mocks vegetarians and vegans.

But the net message is the same: factory farming=bad, small farms=good. And when Foer writes that he approves of farms that treat their animals the way we treat pet dogs, that's his real message.

My aunt Greet gave me a book in 1975 that featured the 60 most endangered birds in Europe. In the book, one picture stood out in particular: the White-headed Duck. For lack of better pictures that was the one that got used in the book (out of print – ISBN 90 274 8348 5). Buy the book and take a week!

Somewhere around the Platte River one of the Audubon boys received a black-footed hide from a fur trader. Meanwhile, the black-footed ferret was declared finally, unambiguously, officially extinct.

And this is partly what’s so disappointing about the message of this book: Herzog amasses the research, and sees and does things that involve tremendous suffering and injustice. However, I agree with Mr. Foer that factory farming has to go. Rather than eating dogs, we all ought to eat exclusively small-farmed, free-range meat. Arguments like "Let Them Eat Dog" caricatures the antifactory farm position, which is a shame because it's an important argument to hear.
