Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. But I have to admit that seeing some of the wolves, foxes, asses, and sheep of Dulan county is nice, at least as long as they do not stand in front of some exciting birds. Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background.

Back in 2016 one very unexpected bird appeared in the Mexican highlands: an American Flamingo. Ever since then, the two birds would show up during the winter months in the Metropolitan Park, always together. Last week, we quite impulsively jumped in a rental car and drove 2600 miles round trip to south Texas to pick up 34 new species. I live near a small zoo. All of the animals, birds and reptiles who live there are native species who were once injured, have gone through rehabilitation, and ended up with a permanent disability which prevented their return to the wild. The man arrived at the zoo with bloody puncture wounds up and down both arms.

Thirteen Spoon-billed Sandpipers have arrived in England after spending sixty days in quarantine at Moscow Zoo. The birds were captured on their breeding grounds in Siberia and the hope is that they can be used to start a captive breeding program in an attempt to bring the species back from the brink.

Actually, it’s one I originally thought was endemic to the Chatham Islands, a group of islands to the east of the main islands that hosts endemic species like the Black Robin.
