Well, it is rather common and can even be scarce regionally, but overall it is not a difficult bird to find in Germany so long as a cunning birder frequents reedy wetlands. Intriguingly, Common Moorhens are also rather common in Germany’s large ornamental city parks and zoos. Beware of Crocodiles. City slicker needs no reeds.

Perhaps the star bird here is the Nonggang Babbler , which was first observed by professional ornithologists only in 2005. While the Black-throated Laughingthrush is native to Southeast Asia, it is also kept at the Toronto Zoo and has its own web page there. The birds are not closely related.

Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. But I have to admit that seeing some of the wolves, foxes, asses, and sheep of Dulan county is nice, at least as long as they do not stand in front of some exciting birds. Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background.

Seriously, ducks must be the toughest creatures ever, the Chuck Norrises of the bird world, because they endure this thing all the time. In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. The boat is called the Legacy and it is an 80 foot whale watching vessel that generally seats 115, but takes about 70 for birding trips. If I saw that bird, I did not appreciate it, so it is not on my list.

I live near a small zoo. All of the animals, birds and reptiles who live there are native species who were once injured, have gone through rehabilitation, and ended up with a permanent disability which prevented their return to the wild.
