Birding Ruili, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

When I last visited the town almost 10 years ago, it had a Wild West feel, and Wikipedia claims that it is “an important location for trade with Myanmar, in both legal and illegal goods and services” but it seemed pretty tame to me this time. This photo explains the scientific species name haemacephalus (bloodheaded).

Birding Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

10,000 Birds

As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. However, it is only a short taxi ride away from the airport where most travelers will arrive at – better to see birds instead of just eating fast food while waiting for a connecting flight.

Birding Shanghai in July 2023

10,000 Birds

15 Australian Birds (Episode 1)

10,000 Birds

It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. 15 Australian Birds (Episode 2)

10,000 Birds

Some more photos of Australian birds mixed with irrelevant facts and mediocre half-jokes, as a way to pass away the time while being under lockdown in Shanghai (note: it is over now but this post was written during the lockdown). It must be a bit frustrating for a flower to be less colorful than the bird visiting it though.

15 Australian Birds (Episode 3)

10,000 Birds

According to a bird guide published in 1911, “Competent authorities have proposed to divide the world, biologically, into two parts – Australia and the rest of the world, and they have considered Australia the more interesting part.” The species was bred at the zoo of Memphis, Tennesee ( source ). ” ( source ).

Guide to the Birds of China

10,000 Birds

To say that an update of John MacKinnon’s “A Field Guide to the Birds of China” (2000) has been highly anticipated by birders interested in Chinese birds is almost an understatement. Mind you, I am not a particularly good birder – I am the kind of birder who really needs a good bird guide.
