I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. When I arrived in the morning, there were many birds and no people. The namesake “lake” generally only exists when there is enough runoff during the spring, as the area was extensively modified for farming years ago.

While entering our double kayak I asked Andrew Hester, a local bird expert, if bilharzia is present in the shallows of the Ngotwane Dam, further down the river. albiventris ) and fish eating Pied Kingfishers ( Ceryle rudis ). Among 60 or so heron species in the world this is the only one using this peculiar fishing technique.

Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. There weren’t that many birds at all, they hated the sounds as much as I did. And then a bird of prey appeared in low flight through the tree crowns. And the bird I miss the most is the Redwing. Their claim to fame?

This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). Old Crow is named not for the bird, but for Dr. James C. or “uh-huh!”

Beside birds, in this park you stand a chance of spotting the Eurasian Lynx , Brown Bear and Gray Wolf ! It is possible to reach it on the Friday afternoon, sleep there and go birding at the crack of dawn on Saturday. Well, do you really? The Forgotten Road does not exist on the GPS screen either. Over-all there were almost 80,000 photos taken, nearly 50 story’s posted on this website, and 10 countries, all with some amazing birds. In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. So, there are 21 birds that make my top 10 for the year.

Will Raup is a birder from upstate New York who helped Corey learn a lot about birds when Corey was first starting out as a birder.
