Around Broome we have several members of the Kingfisher family, with the most common being the Sacred Kingfisher and the Red-backed Kingfisher. Only, once I got there, I discovered that the coffee, while good, can’t compare to the birds. Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). I have a thing for birds with large eye-rings (also for birds with ‘spectacles,’ a similar look).

I only taxonomy from phylum to family, since i feel like there wouldnt be much reason to include genus, since a lot of genuses only have a couple of species and since you should be able to guess the animal by knowing the family and where it lives, size etc.

On our first visit, the only opportunity to do any birding was to spend a few hours in Parque De Coloma. This beautiful bird, sporting such a unique tail seemed quite happy to see me.

The larger goannas tend to not make it in, but smaller specimens do and we are always aware of their presence due to the reaction of the birds. Brown Honeyeaters are the most common of the honeyeater family in our garden and when a goanna is present they chatter away and we have to look to see what is bothering them.

Not only is Spain a stronghold for these birds, but they are hard to miss — huge, bright white, social, and not in the least shy of humans and human dwelling-places. As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. They are a common enough coastal bird that can been seen from shore on some days paddling around the marina, but a nice bird none-the-less.

African Spoonbills seem unfazed by large reptiles. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. There is also a much older blog post on 10,000 Birds (by Adam Riley) specifically on Africa’s Barbets. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species.
