Jumping out of my “Beat” today

10,000 Birds

Let me start off with being quite clear, there are no grizzly Bears on the Baja! All of which, was for one a one day shoot with the famed bears, as they dined on the fall salmon run. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. Savanah Sparrow.

Bright and Brighter

10,000 Birds

This is my best place to pick up species that inhabit, or visit, the border between the Hot Country thorn forest and highland pine-oak forest habitats. It wasn’t the most colorful species of the day. Backlighting showed off the rusty crown of this Rusty-crowned Ground-Sparrow. But its rump was somewhat bright, I suppose.

I Get Back

10,000 Birds

Four moments (and species) stand out in my own personal birding renaissance: I put an improvised birdbath in my yard to see if I can get the House Sparrows to stop munching on my lettuce plants, and a stunning Black-vented Oriole arrives to bathe. I start visiting a nearby canyon to see what other species might be around.

The HBW even mentions the importance of Ruoergai for this species: “Key sites for migrants include the Ruoergai Plateau (China), which is also an important breeding area” Common Mergansers also seem to use these wetlands as breeding area. The raptors of Ruoergai deserve a separate post.

Some common birds of Shennongjia, China

10,000 Birds

I also only managed to see rather common bird species at Shennongjia, a nature reserve in Hubei province, China. In the past, Great Spotted Woodpeckers mostly lived off renting out their old apartments to other species. The Verditer Flycatcher has found an interesting way to avoid being parasitized by cuckoos.

Queens County Bird Club 2018 Big Sit Results

10,000 Birds

We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot. At 8:30AM we were already at 53 species and we knew we still had many more easy birds to find. Species number 81!

One More Reason for Gratitude

10,000 Birds

Perhaps the fact that we really enjoy talking to each other had a slight negative impact on the number of species seen (“only” 52). Migratory Lark Sparrows were everywhere. Still, a male Archilochus hummer (of either species) is a rare treat here. But there were plenty of small pleasures to keep us entertained.
