Trophy Hunters Imperil Polar Bears

Critter News

Therefore, to me it's a slam dunk as to whether trophy hunters should continue to hunt polar bears. If a species' very survival is threatened, then it is impractical to hunt it for mere entertainment. Tags: indigenous hunting canada polar bear trophy hunting endangered species arctic I have no sympathy for trophy hunters. They are not hunting for food or for any subsistence whatsoever.

US Groups Fight to Save Polar Bear Hunts

Critter News

Now that the species is listed in the US as "threatened," hunters can't import the dead body parts (aka hunting "trophies") in from Canada. Supposedly, environmentalists and animal rights activists have "unfairly made the polar bear into 'the panda bear of North America.'" Chinese Authorities Seize Bear Parts

Critter News

The load included 173 bear paws, one python skin and the carcass of a pangolin — a type of sticky-tongued, toothless, nocturnal anteater that is a menu item in southern China. Bear paws are also considered a delicacy in southern China where exotic animals are favored by diners despite the impact on populations of endangered species. I suppose it shows they are making some effort , but it's still a huge problem.

Saving Marine Animals that Are NOT Cute

Critter News

We hear about the problem with charismatic land species. It's those species that either have a powerful personality or a cute face that endear people to them and garner news attention. Examples include panda bears, wolves, elephants, tigers, etc. It's easier to motivate people to save them as opposed to other species that are vital, but either boring or ugly. Support Animals Asia

I especially appreciate the work they do on those horrific bear bile farms that are really just a form of torture for the animal. Our animal ambassadors embody the ideal that empathy for one animal can evolve into empathy for an entire species and ultimately for all species. Sarah Palin Thinks Bush Administration Too Environmentally Friendly

Critter News

The state has sued Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, seeking to reverse his decision to give polar bears protection under the Endangered Species Act. Sarah Palin, a Republican, and other state officials say that by listing the bear as threatened, the government will cripple offshore oil and gas development. How far off the reservation do you have to be to sue the Bush administration over environmental issues because they are too strict?

Surprisingly, they are overlooked in discussions of Arctic species threatened by global warming. We tend to talk about penguins and polar bears, but these guys are important too. Steve Best on The Left's Ignorance of Cognitive Ethology

In each case, "rational man" had to rethink human identity ¯ his species identity common to all other humans, or rather, all those counted as "human" and as part of the valuer´s community. Mockingbirds bear a grudge against particular people (guardian.co.uk). Steve Best's verbal presentation of his ideas sometimes irks me. It's over-the-top, for me, and I often resent the time I must spend working through the ranting.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: It is deeply troubling that a legally mandated and urgently needed decision to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act has been delayed by one agency of the Interior Department even as another agency rushes ahead with plans to sell oil and gas leases across a huge expanse of critical polar bear habitat in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea (“ Regulatory Games and the Polar Bear ,” editorial, Jan.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ Bearing Up ” (Op-Ed, Jan. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the scientific literature is very clear that polar bear survival is highly threatened in the wild. Because polar bears are at the top of the marine food chain, their bodies accumulate persistent organic pollutants that disrupt their reproductive systems. We must recognize the shortsighted nature of Governor Palin’s appeal not to list the polar bear as endangered.

J. Baird Callicott on Misanthropy

Animal Ethics

The preciousness of individual deer, as of any other specimen, is inversely proportional to the population of the species. As omnivores, the population of human beings should, perhaps, be roughly twice that of bears, allowing for differences of size. Some indication of the genuinely biocentric value orientation of ethical environmentalism is indicated in what otherwise might appear to be gratuitous misanthropy.

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 3 of 13

Animal Ethics

One might first ask, “Why does higher intelligence mean that one species is more valuable than other species?” Second, there are other species besides human beings that have high intelligence, e.g., chimpanzees and dolphins. What should our moral attitude be toward eating members of these species? This, however, is not our world, so I don’t understand the bearing of the question.
