The second bear to meet its end this year on the Trans-Canada Highway has prompted an animal rights group to call for immediate repairs to a fence line intended to protect wildlife in Banff National Park. Park staff had been monitoring the bear in the hopes the adult female would avoid the busy roadway. From the Calgary Herald.

Ugh, this is barbaric and right out of the dark ages. A declawed, defanged bear is chained to a stake as hunting dogs bark and snap, trying to force the bear to stand on its hind legs. The training exercise called bear baying is intended to make the bears easier to shoot in the wild and it's only allowed in South Carolina.

The tracks of two young Polar Bear skirt a crack in the sea ice in Admiralty Inlet. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant.

Oddly enough, it is the Western Bluebird that bears the taxonomic name of Sialia mexicana ; but in my experience, the Eastern Bluebird ( Sialia sialia ) is much more common in most of Mexico. Right down the middle, 176 species so far, which is almost an exact average for January 24th over the past five years.

I saw this at Bear River Migratory Refuge in Utah. This also might be a way to compromise with swallows who try to build right over your home’s doorway. This rookery also housed nesting Barn Owls (not the bird box on the lower half of the pole on the far right). Give them their own platform elsewhere in the yard.
