For me, the only “birding” movie that I knew of were the Dogs of War (1980). After the Dogs of War was aired on state TV in the late 1980s, a friend of mine, found observing birds nesting on electricity pylons in a breadbasket country north of Belgrade, was taken to the police under suspicion of espionage. Probably not.

The food in question is from Australia. A local distributor of a popular brand of dog food said Monday it had suspended sales of the product following reports that dogs who ate it had died from aflatoxin poisoning. It's upsetting to see so many dogs getting sick from the food.

We walk our neighbours’ dogs during the week to our two local parks, which are Brolga Park and Cygnet Park. It gives the dogs a chance to get some exercise and for ourselves to keep track of the different birds that move through the area throughout the year. Then even more bizarrely was the sound of a Masked Lapwing.

Wandering the Sydney Australia Botanical Gardens, there were a large number of birds that could have made this list, like the Powerful Owl, but this photo of Little Wattlebird is one of my favorites from the area. Spending time in Darwin Australia, has made that our #1 spot to return to after the year was done.

One of the joys of walking a neighbour’s dog is that you get to see the changes around the local parks on a daily basis. Another treat on my daily dog walk! It was all thanks to one little dog needing to relieve himself on the tree trunk that I looked up and saw them! I took the dog home and returned with my camera.

Two other individuals were marked with flags from South Australia and were obviously having a “stopover” in Broome before they continue their journey south. We have also had a Ruddy Turnstone in recent weeks that was marked in South Australia and is no doubt also taking a break before flying further south.

Because “duck, duck, goose” is a little too wintry (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) for a post written in the dog days of August. In Australia, ornithologists have finally gotten their hands on a Night Parrot , the first such capture in more than 100 years. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct.

Pied Oystercatchers around Broome always lead you away from their nest sites or their chicks whether you are human or a dog. It can be quite amusing when a Pied Oystercatcher walks a dog away from an area rather than just fly off. When they walk away from the nest they don’t leave evidence as to where it is.

When you approach the gate it will still not say where it goes, but will warn you that the property has 1080 dog baits on it in an attempt to eradicate wild dogs. One advantage of walking, or should I say running with this dog, around the park is that we have to stop at every tree. Recently the Shire got new composting bags for the collecting of dog poo. However, being the weekend, there were dogs on the beach and they decided to move away after a short period of time. The birds immediately flew down towards the dog and tried very hard to tease it and make it follow, but it had no intention in doing that. The other pair of Pied Oystercatchers also had their eggs hatch this week and they are in an area with no vehicular traffic, but there are dogs on that section of beach and it is a popular area for walking and more recently fat bike riding through the dunes. They had to close their Poo Ponds to tourists/birders recently due to a feral dog problem, but this has been addressed and access is now possible. The Little Curlew Numenius minutus is a medium sized shorebird and the smallest curlew to visit Australia.
