Broome’s Pied Oystercatchers are breeding again

Well, it is that time of year again and shorebirds are breeding. Hopefully all of the migratory shorebirds that left Roebuck Bay earlier this year have been successful at breeding in the Northern Hemisphere and will soon be heading back to our shores. I have also learnt to not count my chickens before they hatch.

Invasive species in Australia

In Australia we definitely have our fair share of invasive species and the main problem is that we are such a huge land mass with such a small population. The population of Australia is concentrated mainly around the city areas along the coast and many invasive species have been able to spread with ease.

Black-tailed Godwits around Broome

In Australia we encounter the subspecies Limosa limosa melanuroides. The Black-tailed Godwits that we observe here in Australia breed in east Siberia and Mongolia. In non-breeding plumage they are almost brown, but add a reddish brown colour when they are in breeding plumage.

Thirteen years of weekly posts

As I sit at my desk writing this post about the latest attempt at breeding for one of our pairs of Pied Oystercatchers I realise I have written 677 posts now for this website. Nothing to do for a few days other than stand around on a rock together and contemplate another attempt at breeding. One large Pied Oystercatcher family !

Olive Sea Snake that has had a dog visit it on the beach Olive Sea Snake with obvious bulge Stoke’s Sea Snake Stoke’s Sea Snake with wounds Dubois’ Sea Snake Dubois’ Sea Snake being returned to the sea! She also monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach by bicycle and on foot.

Cry “Havoc!” or a Birding Movie before the Birding Movie

For me, the only “birding” movie that I knew of were the Dogs of War (1980). After the Dogs of War was aired on state TV in the late 1980s, a friend of mine, found observing birds nesting on electricity pylons in a breadbasket country north of Belgrade, was taken to the police under suspicion of espionage. Probably not.
