In Australia, ornithologists have finally gotten their hands on a Night Parrot , the first such capture in more than 100 years. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct.

Wandering the Sydney Australia Botanical Gardens, there were a large number of birds that could have made this list, like the Powerful Owl, but this photo of Little Wattlebird is one of my favorites from the area. Spending time in Darwin Australia, has made that our #1 spot to return to after the year was done.

This time it was stood amongst the Greater Sand Plovers and one Lesser Sand Plover that still had breeding plumage and several Red-necked Stint. Oriental Plover with Greater Sand Plovers , a Lesser Sand Plover in breeding plumage and Red-necked Stint. Sanderling marked in South Australia stopping off in Broome.

It is at the same time of year that the migratory shorebirds that spend part of each year in Broome are also breeding, but in the Arctic. However, being the weekend, there were dogs on the beach and they decided to move away after a short period of time. The dog had one thing on its mind-get covered in soft sand and then leave.

Migration hasn’t really kicked in, the breeders aren’t tied to breeding territories any more, and it is hot and sweaty outside. What other birds can you find in summer’s dog days? Nothing is quite as much of a downer to a birder than the summer doldrums. Uncomfortable weather and a lack of birds make birders grumpy.

It does not seem that long since the shorebirds all returned from their northerly migration and already we are starting to see the change in their breeding plumage. The shorebirds will start to leave Broome next month to breed high up in the Arctic and will mostly fly non-stop to the Yellow Sea in China.

The other pair of Pied Oystercatchers also had their eggs hatch this week and they are in an area with no vehicular traffic, but there are dogs on that section of beach and it is a popular area for walking and more recently fat bike riding through the dunes. We are into the second attempt at breeding for this season in Broome for Pied Oystercatchers. They will move away from the chicks to distract the predator and I have seen it work very well with dogs! We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily!

There are flights heading north each evening and these birds will leave our shores to breed in the northern hemisphere. Currently the shorebirds are all heading into breeding plumage and the degree of colour varies significantly as you can see in the header photo. Our daily walks to our two local parks with our neighbour’s dog are currently quite a dangerous affair. With a dog you have to approach the trees for obvious reasons. More Little Friarbirds breeding and more birds swooping! The Little Friarbirds are nesting and they are not happy as we approach the trees.

The Little Curlew Numenius minutus is a medium sized shorebird and the smallest curlew to visit Australia. You are more likely to see large flocks of them on open plains than single birds, but they are an unpredictable bird at best and extremely little is known about the population that visits Australia each year.

We monitor the Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach each year and it can all be covered on foot or by bicycle-tide dependant! We keep our observations to a minimum to avoid disturbance and usually only visit the nest site once to get GPS coordinates to report to Birds Australia’s Nest record Scheme.

The birds first arrived on the mainland in 1996 after breeding on the nearby island, Lawrence Rocks. They had been breeding successfully until 2007 when every single nest failed due to predation by foxes. A solution was sought and a pair of Maremma dogs were put in place to protect the breeding colony.
