In Australia we definitely have our fair share of invasive species and the main problem is that we are such a huge land mass with such a small population. The population of Australia is concentrated mainly around the city areas along the coast and many invasive species have been able to spread with ease.

Return to the Poo Ponds

They had to close their Poo Ponds to tourists/birders recently due to a feral dog problem, but this has been addressed and access is now possible. With all the rain we have had the birds are spread across the whole continent and Alice Springs has had some amazing records recently. Of course there are always warnings!

The first Pied Oystercatcher chicks of 2018

The other pair of Pied Oystercatchers also had their eggs hatch this week and they are in an area with no vehicular traffic, but there are dogs on that section of beach and it is a popular area for walking and more recently fat bike riding through the dunes. Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. They will move away from the chicks to distract the predator and I have seen it work very well with dogs! We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily!

The elimination of vultures had its own knock on effects, such as the increase in feral dogs (now that there was more meat available for them) and corresponding increase in rabies. This story didn’t break today, by the way. The story I linked to is dated to three weeks ago.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding has started!

We keep our observations to a minimum to avoid disturbance and usually only visit the nest site once to get GPS coordinates to report to Birds Australia’s Nest record Scheme. With the data we have collected over the years we are hoping to address the predation of eggs by feral cats in the Broome area.
