Birding Heligoland in Late September

The first half of September (covered in my previous post ) was very productive, but the second half delivered some even better birding. These birds were omnipresent on the bushes and fence posts on the upper land of the island during the first weeks of my stay. We did see Eurasian Skylark , in addition to Horned Lark , as well though.

I recently found out that on this planet of ours there exist people, actual living, walking, breathing people, who claim that birds are robotic drones used by the governments around the world for the purpose of espionage. Birds were basically everywhere around me. Which is exactly what I did. It was so easy, no neck straining!

Birding the Ndumo area, South Africa

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. It goes like this: While fishing, the bird tucks its head down and uses its wings to create a shady area. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you?

On the one hand, it obviously is a splendidly dressed bird in a multitude of expressive colors. Or to put it differently: if an imaginary child of mine ever drew up a male Mandarin Duck out of his or her imagination, I would immediately take away most of the crayons and maybe only leave those necessary to draw the female bird.
