Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay welcomed a new baby female reticulated giraffe on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Both mother and baby will join the other animals on the Serengeti Plain in about three months. At 5 foot, 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 127 pounds! That’s a big baby! The breeding program has been a great success.

A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg.
