Way back in the days when blog posts still got a lot of comments, I wrote a piece on why field guides that arrange species in a more or less strict taxonomic order regularly frustrate me. Taxonomy is constantly changing and so does the order of species in field guides. Order of bird families, non-songbirds. I see a problem.

It can be during migration, in an enormous nesting colony, or with a very gregarious species. The first, Field Guide to the Birds of Trinidad & Tobago, was published by Christopher Helm in London in 2007 and then published in the United States in 2008 by Yale University Press. It is organized taxonomically, with families identified by first scientific and then popular name. The AOU has not accepted that split.

A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. After a long fun day with extended family and friends and long drive back to New York City I didn’t get to bed until well after midnight and Daisy did not understand why I set the alarm for 5 AM. There had been a similar event in September 2008 and it had recovered well. Trail in Hidden Valley National Park Although it initially looks like you would be unlikely to see any birds in the park there were pockets of unburnt trees and we encountered numerous species. It didn’t take long and we found a second and a third bird.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.
