It was June 14 in 2008, when we stopped by the dam for a nice walk after lunch with family in the mountains. As I mined my old birding photos, I recalled one such experience at the Palekhori-Kambi Dam in the eastern part of the Troodos mountain range of Cyprus. In 1996 Scarlett saved her five children during the fire and not so long ago, in 2008, she died after a long-term sickness and ensuring consequences of skin burns. The kittens were placed in nice families in pairs not far from North Shore Animal League, which continued to take care of Scarlett and her children during all her life.

The refuge has an impressive visitor center that opened in 2008, so it is ADA compliant. My impression is that it is a fairly safe area and families are a common sight on weekends, as are school groups. Thus, there is a good amount of online information for planning purposes. Claudia Hollm saw a TV show about a family who had to relinquish their dog because of economic hardship. The family simply did not have enough money to feed their beloved dog and with breaking hearts they relinquished him to a shelter where he died shortly thereafter of a broken heart after being so loved by this family for many years.
