The Lezírias de Vila Franca de Xira (often and erroneously named Ponta de Erva after the most southerly tip) are an extensively farmed area in the north of the estuary. The unsponsored suffering I must endure for this blog… Those pastries are amazing, but if you are a bit peckish: at the Casa they serve a good lunch too.

An avian wetland ballet

As much as I suffer, I can’t help but think about what the combination does to the birds that live in this extreme desert environment. Wings fully extended, tip-toeing thru the shallows, these colorful birds are remarkable to watch. I have no tours booked, and no migrant species have made it this far yet.

Dickcissel in Manhattan

On my way to work this morning I thought I would take a quick stop at Inwood Hill Park way up on the far northern tip of Manhattan. Having missed every Dickcissel in New York State in 2011 I wanted to make sure that I spotted one this year which is why I found myself suffering a cold wind off of the Hudson River shortly after dawn.

The Brown Teal

Like many interesting New Zealand endemics the Brown Teal has unfortunately suffered badly at the hands of man. The last stronghold of the species is Greater barrier Island and the coast of Northland at the northern tip of North Island. Brown Teal chasing a New Zealand Scaup Adult male with almost fully grown youngsters.
