A breeding program in Malaysia will attempt to breed a rescued Borneo Sumatran rhino in order to save the endangered species. Experts cannot confirm how many Borneo Sumatran rhinos remain in the wild, but estimates range from 10 to 30 individuals, many of them isolated from others in their species.

The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). Tomtits are not a species I have ever talked much about on this blog. They were present in Karori Sanctuary but have declined as other species have prospered. They are a widespread species that shows quite a bit of variation: there are five subspecies that are quite distinctive. I’m not actually sure why this is.

As Chilean officials and volunteers rescued 17 birds they noticed the birds were foaming from the beak. The species is being re-introduced in Colombia and Ecuador where the condors are either locally extinct or persist in very low numbers. Other birds were seen crash landing. Another sick condor and two dead ones were found nearby.

Below is one of several rescues that I have made, all but one of which was a juvenile. These frigatebirds can get as much as 40% of its food by stealing it from other birds.

One flock on Cable Beach consisted of a nice mix of species that included Great Knot, Red Knot, Terek Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Curlew Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint and Greater and Lesser Sand Plover. I could rescue them all if there were not so many! This week we had large tides and there were several large flocks on Cable Beach.
