Mosquitoes bite humans and animals with no regard to species, and they bring along a number of illnesses. Because the illness is mosquito-borne, the best way to avoid it is to kill the insects with something like a Mosquito Magnet or a product with DEET before the mosquitoes have an opportunity to pass on the virus.

The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

This was the first geological site protected in the Djerdap area, formed along a fault by incision of the Boljetinska River into the sedimentary rocks. Other species include Grey Wagtail and Marsh Tit. This is a very productive area of mostly open or semi-open habitats , where birds are numerous and easy to spot.

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Even among the protected areas of Serbia, the Iron Gates National Park (in Serbian: Djerdap) stands out as better preserved. Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family.
