On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. The forests are also home to Asiatic Elephants and Capped Langur Monkeys. Kaziranga has one of the densest populations of Bengal Tiger in India.

High up at almost 4500 meters, some Alpine Accentors were posing in the sunshine, justifying the description in the HBW as “large, attractive accentor” (though eBird seems to disagree, instead characterizing the species as a “stocky, stout, and unobtrusive bird”). I still do not like monkeys very much.

Apparently, Longcanggou is a great place to see a variety of parrotbill species. I can only partly confirm this, with my sightings restricted to two species. Like many of the largest species within bird families, the Great Parrotbill looks somewhat plain, at least in the weather I encountered it.

Thanks to fortunate foresight, a lot of land was set aside in Costa Rica as national parks and protected areas (and some of these are easily accessed) but the best forest still happens to be at the terminus of the road and en route, you will be treated to species deficit birding in plenty of pastures. Lots of monkeys there too.

I have seen tens of thousands of birds in my life, and probably around two thousand species. I have no idea what species it was, but the memory is still strong. It is species A. There are also wild boars and macaque monkeys and you are advised to not rustle plastic bags, because they associate the noise with food. In the first full day, we have seen dozens each of giraffes, zebra, warthogs, elephants, 12 rhinos, 30 hippos, 3 Cape Buffalo, crocodiles, jackals, monkeys, baboons, literally a thousand impala, and at least 10 different antelope type animals. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species.

Lead Feather was such an enjoyable cold-weather pint that I almost didn’t notice the Half Acre logo hidden on the back of the can, which is also avian-inspired, in a way: it features the unmistakable monkey-face of a Barn Owl head… but with tentacled octopus arms sprouting out from underneath.

Its great diversity of habitats hosts an incredible bird count of over 900 species, including Africa’s 2nd highest list of endemics and near-endemics (after South Africa). The Caribbean slope of Costa Rica also differs from the islands in having a lot more bird species. White-crowned Pigeon might be on the list, but that rare prize for Costa Rica is far from regular.
