The animals aren’t quite so closely packed as Hollywood can manage, and they tend towards slightly smaller species, in general, but still, its impressive. The lodge is unusual in having a raised walkway behind the lodge, allowing those of us keen to bird or watch wildlife when most normal people are resting in the middle of the day.

The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species. This will act as our base for the next 20 days. The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret.

A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

In early November 2020, there were 15 countries with more than 1000 species eBirded so far. Other than that, there are barely a few hotspots with over 500 species.

The site is famous for a place called Monkey Mia, where dolphins have learnt to come up to the beach a few times a day to get snacks. And I’m glad we did because it’s a great wildlife destination that merits a look from anyone with a passion for the wild. And anyone that likes birds too! Shark Bay is pretty.

Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. One species I really hoped to find on the trip was the Kokako. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity.

I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. A single large spider monkey, which might be out of view, equals a large number of lightly built and small birds which may be scattered across the landscape. A squirrel skittered by … a squirrel is not a bird.
