This may seem like government agency hair-splitting, but the calls needed to be made not to the wildlife division of the wildlife agency, but to the exotic species division of the wildlife agency. The bird is a captive-bred Peregrine/Gyrfalcon hybrid owned by people with an Exotic Species Permit. Are we fed up yet?

These are not subject monkeys, but they are part of the breeding colony. The last of nine monkeys that escaped from the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Hillsboro was found at 2 p.m. Nine Japanese macaque monkeys got loose Friday after their keeper left the cage unlocked and they figured out how to open the door.

Am I over-confident in my thinking that we were so interesting that they were investigating us for a good half an hour, until we moved further upriver? Hoatzin is one of the species I always dreamed to see, and then I forgot they are possible on this tour, so I didn’t expect them! Adult males reach an average length of 2.32

In Costa Rica, they can take the form of everything from toucans (think crows with giant shark inspired beaks) to herons and monkeys. The rails did indeed come to investigate but came up empty-beaked. They don’t need to be professional bird killers either, predators only need to be in the right place at the right time.

There’s an unofficial series of posts on species of birds that occur in threes in T&T (see: bitterns , trogons , antshrikes , spinetails , manakins , hermits , honeycreepers , and resident warblers ). We stopped periodically to investigate various patches along the road. Broad-winged Hawk. Slowly, we continued.

Its great diversity of habitats hosts an incredible bird count of over 900 species, including Africa’s 2nd highest list of endemics and near-endemics (after South Africa). Mago National Park certainly deserved more exploration and I wished we had time to investigate the well appointed campsites along the Mago River.
