I’ve been to this part of central Alabama before, but always during hunting season, my schedule built around the ridiculously early mornings (i.e. Blue Jays and Red-bellied Woodpeckers made up the majority of initial bird life, followed through most of the trip by Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmice. Like, really yellow.

In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders. Within the branches of these very trees, Ochre-bellied, Streaked, Brown-crested, Fuscous and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers hunt.

Not sure that I impressed them, I chose to bluff them and looked left and right for a suitable tree branch to pick. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Finally, the list of birds mentioned in the examples include: Acorn woodpecker, Melanerpes formicivorus.

There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. When you enter the Kozara Floodplain, you can explore both left and right hand side, but going left offers a greater choice of habitats and a larger area.

Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.

To the right of the toucan, a Scaled Pigeon still rests comfortably, while one of many pairs of Orange-winged Parrots flies past in the background. Nothing showed except for a Lineated Woodpecker which I only saw as it flew off. Dusky-capped Flycatcher (lower right) and a Rufous-tailed Jacamar. Grey-headed Kite. Up, then down.

The first surprise came, as we were driving into town, and not one, but two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers flew right across the road in front of us. American Kestrels, Cooper Hawks , and Northern Harriers also found the hunting here to their liking. This one flew right over my head. This one happened to pass right over my head.

Like all members of the Nightjar family, the Buff-collared Nightjar hunts for insects on the wing, at night, and rests immobile during the day, protected by its subtle camouflage.

Like many “wildlife areas” it is open to waterfowl hunting during the season. As the finches flew from the tree tops down to a small creek for water, they occasionally flew back to the trees right above us giving the best views I have ever had of these cheerful seedeaters.

For the first couple of days in Austria we were based right in the heart of Innsbruck, next to the old city. Perhaps most exciting was a Northern Goshawk that we spotted hunting along the river a couple of times. We had a single, heard-only, Eurasian Wren and one Great Spotted Woodpecker. And am I ever glad I did!

Luckily, I have just the mega tour I need, right here in the islands I call home. Filling the niche of the woodpecker here they use their small and long bills to explore and hammer through rotting wood and bark for insects.
