My binoculars were on the seat right next to me, so close and yet, so far. Marks National Wildlife Refuge just after dawn. Marks Wildlife Refuge. In addition to a pair of swimming Common Gallinules , we watched the hunting antics of a juvenile Little Blue Heron , half blue and half white as it transitioned to adult plumage.

Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. I would have known this right away if I was up to date on my Alexander Skutch. We saw a smaller member of the potoo family, Northern Potoo , Nyctibius jamaicensis , at Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, boating and birding the Salado River. This living ball was so small, we all thought it was a Little Tinamou, Crypturellus soui.

Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. Either way, it was a heck of a sight and another example of why Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best place in New York City to see amazing wildlife spectacles.
