This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year. I got to see several Brown Creepers in the area.

Welcome to the Everglades where Wood Storks , spoonbills and frigatebirds are expected, but Canada Goose and Chipping Sparrow require documentation. As we entered the wildlife area we saw hundreds of shorebirds, W hite-faced Ibis , American White Pelican , several species of duck and hundreds of G reater White-fronted Geese. We scoped many birds because the road traversing the wildlife area is elevated above the impoundments allowing the birds to see your vehicle coming from afar.

I snapped these photos on my first birding trip to the newly reopened facility beginning with a White-crowned Sparrow ( Zonotrichia atricapilla ). The fence surrounding the facility is bordered by a dense mixed forest of pine and deciduous trees giving several sparrow and finch species a good location to hang out and observe the birders.

Soon I hit the brakes for a 60 strong flock of Greylag Geese of the Siberian race rubrirostris grazing near the road. whose occupants have already left for Africa, but a clump of elaborate closed nests of Spanish Sparrows hang underneath it. Finally, a large White Stork’s nest (at 850 m a.s.l!) Practicalities.

Despite my best efforts and despite seeing around 200 Canada Geese , I had no luck with the Specklebelly. I saw lots of Canada Geese – about 450 – but no Greater White-fronted Goose. It didn’t take too long for my reverie in my birding Eden to be disrupted by an unleashed dog that flushed the geese.

Clapper Rail , American White Pelican , Snowy Owl , Cackling Goose , Blue-winged Teal , Bald Eagle , Lark Sparrow , Clay-colored Sparrow , Pine Warbler , and Turkey Vulture are all good birds for the count. The Lark Sparrow was found by our sweeper team of Cesar Castillo, Carrie Laben, and David Ringer. That is nuts.

By the time Matthieu Benoit arrived I had only added one more species, a White-throated Sparrow , but the sky had started to lighten in the east and after exchanging pleasantries we got down to the serious business of listening and scanning, striving to not miss a thing. Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond! Not only did I have Sandhill Cranes flying overhead, there were the usual American Kestrels perched on the wires and dozens of Turkey Vultures … and our local Lewis’s Woodpeckers. Fun birding!

Late March in my home borough of New York City is typically when Eastern Phoebe , Pine Warbler , American Woodcock , Osprey , and other early migrants are back but many of our wintering birds, like Snow Goose and American Tree Sparrow , are still sticking around. On my way back to the RV Park, I was able to photograph my first Gold-crowned Sparrows , since my trip to Kodiak Alaska, 3 years ago. This extremely common duck, just never comes to Mexico.

The local flock of geese (mostly Pink-footed, Swan Goose) is not “countable” while the Egyptian Geese and Ruddy Shelducks that occasionally turn up are. Crows, Ravens, Clark’s Nutcrackers, White-crowned Sparrows and assorted waterfowl were all still present, but that was about it. This can cause up to 20 minute waits, which I put to good use, tracking down this nice shot of a White-crowned Sparrow. I would have to say the most common bird in the park, must be the Common Raven.

In the darkening evening and rain, I found the goose among a flock of golf course Canada Geese. The first, the embarrassing heretofore unseen SAVANNAH SPARROW was a consolation prize for my FOY Grasshopper Sparrow. 10 minutes later I was on a Lincoln’s Sparrow. There are so many ways to get target birds.

But Northern Cardinal, Catbird, and White-throated Sparrow do not appear until the 270s, during a visit to Central Park while on business trip to New York City. Lifers includes Gambel’s Quail and Neotropic Cormorant, but the real highlights were the morning fly-out of Sandhill Cranes and the evening fly-in of Snow Geese.
