In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit.

Soon I hit the brakes for a 60 strong flock of Greylag Geese of the Siberian race rubrirostris grazing near the road. whose occupants have already left for Africa, but a clump of elaborate closed nests of Spanish Sparrows hang underneath it. Finally, a large White Stork’s nest (at 850 m a.s.l!) Practicalities.

Established in 1974 to protect the delta, which is formed where the fresh water of the Nisqually River meets to nutrient rich, tidal salt water of the Puget Sound. Nearly 800 acres of wetlands and tidal flats provide diverse habitat for the local birds, as well as large numbers of migratory species, including thousands of ducks and geese.

En route, the first wintering flock of Greylag Geese is already here, followed by Crested Larks , Corn Buntings , Eurasian Linnet , Great Grey Shrike , Common Snipe , Pygmy Cormorant , and Eurasian Marsh Harrier close by. From there onwards, our attention was more on the Danube itself.

On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows. I see why people sometimes call them gray ghosts. Thanks for visiting!

New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa. Conservation, as I have observed before, is interested in protecting the population and the ecosystem over the individual.
