This area, with its year round water supply, supports a huge amount of life, with coyotes, fox, bobcat and many different rodents, like this Mexican Ground Squirrel. There is an old dead tree top, right on the edge of the canyon, that looked like it would be a great spot for the passing birds to make a stop.

We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. Also present in other parts of the park were fox and white-throated sparrows. Wicked, right? No time to take a picture. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. Hat-tip to Stella.

Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.
