Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 1

I like it for its easily recognizable vocalizations which eBird describes as follows: “Raucous, with a diverse repertoire; squawks and chatters loudly, but also whistles tunefully” Frankly, the Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher ( video ) does not look like much – but it is rare at Nanhui and listed as Vulnerable.

The Fallen Yellowlegs

Take note of this Greater Yellowlegs on the wall from a screengrab of a video of the Black Skimmer. Over the course of the following hour or so we observed many different species *coincidentally* alight on the wall near to the body of the fallen yellowlegs. Interested in making photographs, I drifted away from this wall.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. The scientific species name of the Rusty-naped Pitta oatesi honors Eugene William Oates (1845-1911), an English civil servant in India and naturalist.

A Cuckoo in Costa Rica Brings in the Birders

12 species of cuckoos are on the Costa Rica bird list. This Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo was seen and captured on camera by Josh Beck in Panama, the most reliable place to connect with this rare species. It was a ground-cuckoo family and they weren’t even shy! Tortuguero- one of many excellent birding areas in Costa Rica.
