The evening was drawing to a close and we had just checked on the roosting nighthawks and were about to check another field for shorebirds when we spotted a lone Aplomado Falcon perched on a distant tree. We observed it as it changed perch and attracted the ire of the resident Tropical Kingbirds , eventually forcing the falcon to depart.

Located right where the Yangtze River enters the sea (and dividing it into two parts), it is mostly flat farmland. A number of species use Chongming as a wintering spot, not just the Cinereous Vultures I already mentioned in a previous post. Ferruginous means rust-colored, but I have yet to see any rust looking as good as this species.

This vantage point is advantageous in that we can see the ocean, we can see the bay, and, when the winds are right, we can see migrants streaming through. Sadly, on Saturday the winds weren’t right. We are very fortunate here in Broome to have so many of the shorebird species represented on the beaches of Roebuck Bay.
