The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations.

Around thirty miles from Missoula in the Bitterroot Valley lies the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. Even the ride over was productive, with Eurasian Collared-Dove , plenty of Black-billed Magpie , Hooded Merganser , and my first-of-the-year Wood Ducks spotted along the road.

I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. With 154 eBirded species almost single-handedly spotted by the UK expat Geoff Laight, the Paljuvi is the latest addition to the top-5 list. With 154 eBirded species, the Beljarica shares the 4th place on the list.

Black-bellied Whistling-Duck , 11 July, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens, New York (2nd Queens sighting). Then we relocated to a spot where people were seeing several and arrived just in time to see the last one present get snatched by a Peregrine Falcon. A striking species in full adult plumage? A self-found bird?

This area also is where I hope to fill in a few target birds, like the newly spilt Woodhouse’s Scrub Jay, Pinyon Jays and Prairie Falcons. The west end of the lake has been designated as a Watchable Wildlife Reserve, with some nice walking trails and a couple of very nice hides built overlooking some varied waterways.

Our first stop at the World’s Fair Marina was all I’d hoped for – lots of ducks and a not-too-energetic stroll over level ground to see them. At Powell’s Cove Park we got Great Blue Heron , and at Francis Lewis Park we spotted our first Peregrine Falcon , looking tiny far atop the Whitestone Bridge.

This small bustard is perhaps the same species as the more widespread White-bellied Bustard, but if it is separate its a rare bird to see and pretty special. And watching this from above was a Lanner Falcon. After lunch we headed to Fickland Pan, a small farmstead overlooking a pool of water filled with ducks. A Pied Starling.

There was a large island in the centre of the lake that was a roost site to many species of birds. The majority of the ducks that I observed that day were Chestnut Teal , but Pacific Black Ducks were also present. They are doing a magnificent job and there is no doubt that the wildlife appreciates all that they are doing.

Sadly, four other teams did as well, and we finished fourth with our 123 species. Every bird counted as one so common and uncommon species were all appreciated. The Behn River was not flowing in July this year, but the small pools of water still attracted numerous bird species and the freshwater crocodiles were concentrated in the deeper pools. Even the smallest pools of water were providing food and although there were not large numbers of many species there was a huge variety.

The London Wetlands Centre was converted and is managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, founded by the famous duck and swan enthusiast Peter Scott.

By age 2 she could identify over 10 species of birds in our Johannesburg, South Africa, yard by call alone. Very few kids just take to birding like ducks to water (terrible pun I know!).
