The Western Tanager is only one of over 83 bird species that nest in Lassen Volcanic National Park. You can download their bird list here. We spotted this male at Lassen Volcanic National Park last weekend where the Western Tanager nests, usually 20 feet or higher in a conifer. Gotta love that flaming red head. And a look from behind.

In winter, try to bird the “Golubac Sea” (scope necessary), where good species include Smew , Velvet Scoter and Common Eider ; while the cliffs and quarries near the mediaeval Golubac Fortress offer the elusive Wallcreeper (which still eludes me, although I’ve tried this area last winter). Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. The 39 owls include five endemic Caribbean species.

I tend to download my photos from a birding outing, skim through them deleting the very worst and editing the very best, and then never look at them again. An hour or two on a cold day can make a nice dent in the issue, deleting hundreds of out-of-focus or lesser images and sorting the keepers by species or location.

Martins have lost nesting habitat because these cavity nesters don’t have the old dead trees available and even if they do find martin houses, they can have competition from introduced species like House Sparrows and European Starlings.

The Black Swift is considered a Species of Special Concern in California. Plus the fact that they only lay one egg per season which is incubated for about four weeks and the chicks don’t fledge for another fifty days gives you some notion as to why these birds are a Species of Special Concern.

Nick finds a bird-shaped protrusion at the top of the rock – Black-eared Wheatear , not exactly a species I expect to observe from a boat deck. It lives from the Peloponnese and the Aegean Islands across the whole of Asia to the shores of the East China Sea and here I stand at the very edge of the range of this species.

Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. And then there were the Flamingos.
