Having said all that, I’ll give some context by showing, once again, an image I included in my post just last week: This photo, downloaded from a birders’ chat, shows Lake Cuitzeo on Monday, February 5th. Both species can theoretically breed in central Mexico, but in my experience are almost exclusively winter visitors.

What the rings reveal

They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. Only when I downloaded my images did I spot the ring, which was clear and easy to read (2BAT). Rings are not the only way of marking birds, and with a number of species wing tags are more often used.

While plowing through my computer-hard-drive-clogging downloads of recent bird photographs from my various cameras and trying to delete the crummy and enhance (or even just keep track of) the keepers, I noticed that I had a long series of images of a displaying male Ruddy Duck. &# and be on my way looking for other birds.

Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. And then there were the Flamingos.
