When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. And the crying would never stop.

While walking the dog I could hear Serin , Wren and several Black Redstarts proclaiming their territories. The ponds were full of birds as usual with abundant Common Snipe as well as Ruff , some Dunlin , Stilts and a few ducks, including Red-crested Pochards. The sentinels of a Portuguese spring were singing.

Not long after the compilation gets underway starting with the order Anseriformes , we come to Aix sponsa and the compiler asks – hopefully – “Any Wood Ducks?” Now, Wood Ducks are somewhat uncommon in eastern New York in winter and after an inevitable few seconds of silence, some smirking wisecracker pipes up with “Do wooden duck counts?”

It seemed oblivious to the people walking their children and dogs and appeared not to hear Lady Gannet bleating on about how well grey grout would work with cream wall tiles. It hopped into the reeds when a dog leapt in to chase the ducks off, but reappeared within moments to finish up the food that the scaredy ducks had left behind.

Pillar Point provided an easily accessible location to see a variety of shorebirds, scoters, loons, grebes, cormorants, ducks, and gulls, among others. There were so many birds flying so close to the few of us who happened to be there (mostly dog walkers) that there was concern that we’d actually get hit by a careening shearwater.

They had to close their Poo Ponds to tourists/birders recently due to a feral dog problem, but this has been addressed and access is now possible. Previously we had hundreds of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , but the remaining ducks were very few. We are not allowed into our ponds, so they are very lucky in Alice Springs.

Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. Black-headed Gulls somehow managed to build 31 nests on a few dead tree trunks left in the water, but Common Terns require bare soil and not having any on inner dykes – which were a safe haven, they build 16 nests on the higher outer dyke, a place exposed to foxes and stray dogs.
