I have seen dozens of Snowy Plovers and other shorebirds along the Emerald Coast of Florida, but until last week I had never seen their chicks! Peeping and dragging one or both wings along the sand, they definitely attracted attention. When we arrived at the first nest, they immediately commenced with their broken-wing display.

We assembled at nine in the morning in a small parking lot outside the naval base in Key West, Florida. The weeks leading up to spring break had been a whirlwind, and the days before the trip mostly spent driving and exploring Florida. Southern Florida offers many unique wintering birds, but perhaps none more so then the sparrows that call different parts of Florida their winter homes. Although, these birds in Florida are pretty far south. That slightly larger body creates a smaller headed look on the Eurasian Wigeons. I prefer a little sweat first.

They all assured me, of course, that the bird had just disappeared and would most definitely reappear shortly but they, it goes without saying, had already seen the bird. Steve Schellenger, Arie Gilbert, Mary Normandia, Eric Miller and Andrew Baksh (who got nice shots of the bird ) were all there but the bird was not. Aaarrrggghhh!

June 4, 2010 Oil washes up on barrier islands and beaches from Louisiana to Florida. The babies that hatched from these eggs were released on Florida’s east coast. The visibility of the BP oil spill might be blurred but it is definitely not forgotten. We documented the relocation of several turtle nests.

People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!). We don't say we hate cows. In fact we say we love them. There's sadism there, and that's not good.

We finally had to leave to get back in time to see James Currie do his keynote address but the memory of the sheer spectacle of that many gulls will plague my nightmares for years to come…if you get the chance to get to Daytona Beach in the late afternoon in winter you should definitely make the trip. Upon arrival, I was surprised to see that the bird had a single, very long (perhaps 14”) tail feather – definitely not a tern. She verified the bird’s identity and told me that the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores, Florida was one of the few places equipped to handle this species.

Yes, I know that lots of birders have seen it at those wetlands in Florida and yes, it has a wide distribution, and yes, I have birded in places where it occurs for many years but that’s exactly why it was a nemesis. Here is an example: I think I saw a Red-tailed Pennant, Brachymesia Furcata, two weeks ago in the Florida Keys; that’s my photo above. It definitely was a small dragonfly, and all photos show it with flat wings. I am sure my dragonfly friends reading this review will not fail to tell me if I am wrong and why.

Southern Cassowary with chicks by Duncan Wright Carlos Sanchez was particularly appreciative of a new bird for him in Florida. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. Northern Florida represented a refreshing change of scenery and an opportunity to explore with a renewed sense of discovery.

It was really cute, they even spelled out the definition of anthropomorphism. Space Coast Birding and Nature Festival in Florida is another good time—Florida. My first outline and sample chapter was rejected for being “too technical.” They asked me to anthropomorphize and say things like, “eagles fall in love for life.”

The African or Angola Pitta is the holy grail of the Southern African birder and definitely the “most-wanted” bird in our region. At least she contributed to science… My Best Bird of the Year was a Snowy Plover , which I first spotted along the Florida Panhandle. This is so unfair. Erica also chose a shorebird.
