After three attempts, I finally found this incredibly rare vagabond sandpiper spinning amongst more common local species; interestingly enough, it prefers the company of Bonaparte’s Gulls , which the phalarope happens to resemble in both winter plumage and feeding territory. My new birding buddy, Ignacio Torres, knew of this area because a company had built a large partially-paved access road as part of a plan to build a housing development on a pristine, wooded hill. We saw 50 species in around five hours, which is a solid number for a summer outing. This site is along a small river, named Río Bello.

The trees are of one species and nearly devoid of insect life, the only plants are ornamental or lawn, and the amount of cover at ground level is virtually nil. There is one other nature reserve further south, the Obedska bara wetland, managed by the state forestry company. When such a company runs a nature reserve, it is a bit like having a fox to watch over your chickens. After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. In New Zealand, the Spotted Dove is an introduced species.

As a consequence, this species is only a rare vagrant in Serbia. Furthermore, the Slav Grebe was seen at that very spot two hours earlier in the company of the two BNGs – the same scene I observed. Pomarine Jaegers, some with long tail spoons, kept us company most of the second day. Perhaps the best experience of the two days I spend offshore was not a bird, but a mammal. Up until the middle of last century, this species of whale was only known from the remains of beached individuals.
