As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. As I walked out on my back porch on Friday morning, the first day of the count, it was a cool, clear day and the birds were very active at the feeders.

Since no-one lives here, there is no organised rubbish collecting. The lower arrow: Stevanove Ravnice and the flooded mouth of the former Karas River. The Danube being 3 km wide here has another, sad consequence: all floating rubbish is being wind-blown to this bank. The reserve authorities do not seem to care about it.

Fortunately, I had managed a collection of very bad photos before the bird flew off. And a Hairy Woodpecker and Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireo , also FOYs, insisted on giving me good photos. Suddenly, a large bird, which seemed to have a bright yellow breast and black head, flew overhead to a point behind multiple branches.

Golden-fronted Woodpeckers apparently like blackberries, too. And when I’m lucky enough to have a Golden-fronted Woodpecker visit the garden, I know that, for some reason, it will be on the jacaranda tree. This year, that pair of Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are big customers as well. One of our birdiest plants.

Until recently, it was considered to be the same species as the Eurasian three-toed Woodpecker (P. tridactylus). As a boy he was struck by polio which scarred him for life.

At one occasion, during the hike Tsanakis collected wild mushrooms and in a restaurant, asked the chef to prepare those for us. Great Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopos major. Eurasian Green Woodpecker – Picus viridis. Also, trekking poles proved useful. The cuisine was magnificent, especially lamb.

We stop again and search the leaves: Rufous Treepie (a rather handsome forest crow), Greater Racket-tailed Drongo with its long streamers, Lesser Goldenback woodpecker… We’re winding through the forest. The original specimens were collected in dense jungle, and the recent sightings in more open forest may represent suboptimal habitat.

Our time on the towers and walkways was rewarded by a number of great views of a Bare-necked Fruitcrow collecting nesting material, a flock of Curl-crested Aracaries, a mixed tanager flock that included gaudy Paradise, Green and Gold and Magpie Tanagers, and a pair of Red-stained Woodpeckers, a male White-necked Jacobin among other species.

This large woodpecker is one of Cuba’s rarest birds, with a small population of 600-800 individuals, who are mostly seen on the Zapata Peninsula.** There is one historical record in eBird, representing a specimen collected by Fermin Z. Unlike the Bee Hummingbird, we saw the Emeralds everywhere we went, even in Havana.

Another crested bird adding to my collection. Now the plain colored Hornero with a crest was a lot prettier than any of the previous Horneros I had seen. Crested Hornero.
