In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., I’m not quite sure where I was at the time, probably working, and it was six more years till I got my state Henslow’s Sparrow at Shawangunk NWR (a shorter drive and a more cooperative bird). a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state.

The Rufous-collared Sparrow is apparently a common bird in Central and South America, but in Mexico it only occurs in the southernmost state of Chiapas. I think it is the most beautiful sparrow I have ever seen. Even though some say good wildlife photography should not contain manmade elements, I like everything about this photo.

In 1898, Hermon Bumpus published a paper about change in the morphology in a population of House Sparrows that he proposed was an example of Darwinian Natural Selection in action. The Latin name webbiana apparently does not stand for the English botanist Philip Barker-Webb but rather for an English gentleman J. As you can imagine, the study was done in China.

There were Black Phoebes hawking insects around the ponds … Ruby-crowned Kinglets foraging in the trees… and a male Bushtit collecting nesting material. The ranch’s ponds yielded several Ring-necked Ducks … large numbers of American Wigeon … several Bufflehead … and Pied-billed Grebes. Fun birding!

At one occasion, during the hike Tsanakis collected wild mushrooms and in a restaurant, asked the chef to prepare those for us. House Sparrow – Passer domesticus. Tree Sparrow – Passer montanus.
