Protection for a fee: Band-tailed Gulls and Red-legged Cormorants

With birds, this happens when one takes prey or other food caught or collected by another. The following photo sequence depicts a territorial Band-tailed Gull “collecting its protection service fee” from a Red-legged Cormorant nesting within the territory the gull protects on the Palomino Islands in front of Lima-Peru.

What’s Up with the ABA?

The ABA’s mission statement is vague: “The American Birding Association inspires all people to enjoy and protect wild birds.” Without a clear vision for the future, it seems difficult to search for, let alone hire, the right person. Simply put, birding is fundamentally different than it was 50 years ago.
