This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. The Golden-tailed Woodpecker shares something with the German flag – it is called golden-tailed even though to me the color of its tail is yellow, not golden. No doubt the woodpecker has similar considerations. In terms of breeding behavior, starlings are a diversified group – some use helpers, others do not.

I have witnessed small groups of these gorgeous aerial acrobats twice, from an excellent vantage point, engage in what seems to be a courtship or pair bonding display. This is my least favorite feeder of the group, partly for this reason. My Red-bellied Woodpecker takes over the Classic feeder daily during the winter several times a day, except for the day a Chipping Sparrow just refused to leave. I am very tempted to add the Plus feeder to my collection.
