The machine-gun drumming of a Chestnut Woodpecker greeted us once we alighted from the vehicle. No visual on the woodpecker, sadly – several Scaled Pigeons bolted from the treetops as we searched, though. One of a small group of Yellow-legged Thrushes we spotted feeding in the trees.

Stands of large trees attract the largest woodpecker in T&T: Crimson-crested Woodpecker. Routine sightings of Lilac-tailed Parrotlet are of flocks screaming hundreds of feet overhead, so it was incredible to spend hours with this small group of 12-15 birds as they preened, huddled, and bickered.

Of course, it was busting with birds and got us many firsts with White-throated Towhees , Berylline Hummingbirds , and a Gray-backed Woodpecker. A group of Bushtits (melanotis Group) are similar to the Bushtits we know and love but with a black facemask. On the way there we swung by a seemingly random patch in a field.

There were two cars used by project participants, and I, the only birder in the group, drove the first car. Among the possible species there are Rock Bunting , Eurasian Wryneck , Grey-headed and Eurasian Green Woodpeckers , European Honey Buzzard , Lesser Spotted Eagle. This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

This one is a female, although there was more than one male present in the group of some 10 that I saw. But unlike Paso Ancho, there are Acorn Woodpeckers there to harass them. Your eyes do not deceive you; the woodpecker is significantly larger than the owl. But it definitely spends time in Paso Ancho, on its way to wherever.

You could add Middle Spotted and Grey-headed Woodpeckers to the list. Syrian Woodpecker is a species of forest edges or open woodland and parks; it doesn’t go into closed canopy forest. In the city, it avoids deeper and larger forests (a domain of the next two species), but visits small groups of trees or tree-lined streets.

I’d love to have known where and when the Great Spotted Woodpecker in my photograph below was ringed, but though the ring is clearly visible, the number stamped on it isn’t. This same area had a very strong population of Acorn Woodpeckers. I got to see my first ever Arizona Woodpecker here as well. The Yellow-eyed Junco was in a small group of Dark-eyed Juncos , all feeding on the oak forest floor. Another new Lifer that joined the list that morning was the Mexican Jay.
